Taking care of our bodies, the temple of God, is important to success. The good news is that no matter what you did in the past, you can still do something today to be healthier and feel better. Our bodies are so incredibly resilient because we have a God who is an amazing designer.
Imagine you finally make lots of money and you are on one of the dream luxuries vacations to the tropical island. When you arrive, you notice that you have a headache and sore throat...oh no, you're coming down with a cold. You will not be able to enjoy fully all the things you work so hard to achieve if you don't feel good. God created us body, mind and spirit. We need all three components to be successful in life.
In April of 2021, they found a lump in my breast, and I went into surgery and had it removed. Both of my parents died of cancer, Mom breast cancer and Dad pancreatic cancer. I knew I was high risk but didn't know it would come so soon. Because of Mom and Dad, I already know quite a bit about cancer, but now because of my own health, I researched even more to find answers. Some things that I found were surprising, but some gave me hope.
Did you know that cancer is a big profitable business? In 2021, market and consumer reports concluded that cancer spending is about $187 billion dollars. When Mom got cancer at 58, we asked the doctor "why did she get cancer?" The doctor's answer was basically, "No one knows, you either have bad genes or bed luck. But trust us and keep showing up for treatments, we will help you." The patients are told that they are powerless to change. She went through one treatment after another. When she hit the 5-year mark of survival, the oncologist doctor got a huge bonus, and told her he was done treating her. There is no more monetary incentive to keep treating her. So sad. I was surprised that my biopsy for the breast lump costed me $7000 of copay. Then my surgery was not an option. They just scheduled it and did it. I was lucky because it was very early, so I didn't need further treatment. But surgery, chemo, radiation, all cancer related medication is huge profitable business. Don't believe everything the doctor tells you or everything you see on internet. If the Milk industry is sponsoring the website or advertising, then they will promote dairy products and tell you to eat more dairy. Don't believe it, look at who is sponsoring the material you are reading. Be wise.
Two out of 5 people will have cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Well, it happens that cancer is caused by some things (other than genes and bad luck) and research proves it. 90% of cancer is caused by diet, lifestyle and environment. Diet is what you eat or drink. Lifestyle is how active and how stressed you are. Environment is harmful factors in where you live and work. There are specific studies done that shows direct correlation between cancer and certain foods and lifestyle. These are helpful to know because if you cut out those things in your diet, you will drastically increase your chances of being cancer free. What foods should we cut out? Alcohol, process food, sugar, and red meat. A leading cause for cancer that no doctor likes to tell you because it's a sensitive topic.... that is Obesity and lack of exercise. The studies are all over the internet, but these are the causes directly related to cancer. An interesting fact was that an average American consumes not 50 lbs., not 100 lbs., but 170lbs of sugar per year!!!! Shocking....right? Another cause that they don't like to talk about is Stress. Stress not only causes cancer, but it is responsible for almost all disease. (We will discuss this topic another time.)
After my breast cancer surgery, I remember God giving me a message clearly. "You are slowly killing yourself if you don't change directions." I remember being so mad at my mom because she could have taken better care of herself. If she only knew how much her life meant to us!! I knew too much about cancer and I do not want to go down that road, so I took massive action and changed my life drastically. I had a job which I sit all day and stare at the computer, and it was very stressful always. I quit my stressful job and took a minimum wage waitress job at a senior living facility. Why? because I know I need to exercise and if it is a job requirement, it will force me to be active. I recently stopped working because I had to prepare for the move to Taiwan, but the daily recommendation for exercise is 30 min a day. I changed to a mostly plant- based diet. I haven't given up meat, dairy and sugar completely, but I eat very little of those. We have to find a lifestyle that is sustainable for us or we will get discouraged and just give up. Once in a while, I will still go out and enjoy a meal with some unhealthy stuff. But as soon as I can, I go back to "eating the rainbow". It just means eating lots of colorful vegetables and fruits.

There are lots of options when it comes to cancer-fighting foods that are good for us. It can be overwhelming if you read all the information out there. But just as the cause for cancer is many factors combined, death by a thousand cuts, the cure for cancer is also many, many factors. There isn't just one miracle food that you can eat but hundreds. But here are the top cancer-fighting foods that you should consume: cruciferous vegetables, flax seeds, soy, green tea, mushrooms (cooked), berries, garlic and turmeric (powder or capsule). I wrote this list on a piece of paper and put it on my fridge to remind me these are what I should be eating. Even just a small amount of these food has mighty cancer-fighting power. A study was done with a group of women eating one cooked white mushroom per day and breast cancer was reduced 63%. I also drink probiotic drink because your gut is connected to your brain. Gut health is Brain health. You can make your own Kombucha or kefir drink for cheap. Or eat something fermented such as kimchi or sauerkraut to help your gut microbiome get stronger. Like I mentioned, this is a huge topic and there are tons of information available out there, but this is the inexpensive, condensed, cliff-note version of it to build up the cancer-fighting army inside your bodies. If you just start exercising 30 min a day and eat a plant-based diet, you are going to feel so amazing. Then with a healthier body, you can accomplish so much more for the glory of God on this earth.
